Privacy Policy
Last updated: 13 May 2026
This privacy policy applies to the mobile app Walk Through Time, developed by Walk Through Time (WTT). We value your privacy and handle your data with care.
1. What data do we process?
The app processes the following data:
- Location data (GPS): The app requests access to your location to determine whether you are near a historical location. This data is processed solely on your device and is never stored on our servers or shared with third parties.
- Progress data (local): Visited locations, earned badges and points are stored locally on your device using secure storage (Expo SecureStore and, for non-sensitive data, AsyncStorage). This data does not leave your device unless you actively create a backup (see below).
- Optional backup with recovery code: You can voluntarily create a backup of your progress via the Badges page. In that case, only your visited locations, unlocked badges and earned points are stored anonymously on our servers (Supabase), linked to a 6-character recovery code that you keep yourself. No personal data, email addresses or device identifiers are sent. The recovery code is generated server-side and is known only to you.
2. Advertising (Google AdMob)
The app shows advertisements via Google AdMob, an advertising service from Google LLC. AdMob may collect technical data, such as an advertising ID from your device, to display ads and measure their effectiveness.
When you first launch the app, you are asked to consent to personalized advertising (GDPR consent). You can refuse this consent; you will then receive non-personalized ads.
For more information on how Google handles data, please refer to Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy.
3. No user accounts
The app does not use user accounts. You do not need to register or log in. We do not collect any personally identifiable information.
4. Third-party services
The app uses the following third-party services:
- Google Maps: For displaying the map. Google's privacy policy applies.
- Supabase: For retrieving content (location texts, images and audio), and for the optional backup of your progress with a recovery code (see section 1). No personal data is sent to Supabase. More information: supabase.com/privacy.
- OpenRouteService: For calculating walking routes. No personal data is sent. More information: openrouteservice.org/privacy-policy.
- Google AdMob: See section 2.
5. Your rights (GDPR)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to access, rectify and erase your data. Because we do not store any personal data, there is nothing for us to access or delete.
Data collected by Google AdMob falls under Google's privacy policy. For requests about this, you can contact Google via myaccount.google.com.
You can erase your local app data (badges, visits) yourself via: Settings → Apps → Walk Through Time → Storage → Clear data.
Have you created a backup with a recovery code and want it deleted? Send an email with your recovery code to the address in section 6 — we will then manually delete the corresponding backup row. Without the code we cannot identify your backup, because there is no link to you as a person.
